Advertising tests: when to continue and when to stop
SNS Team · Reviewed 2026-11-05
“Let's try a little longer” can become open-ended spending.
Before starting, agree an affordable loss, a test period and clear evidence for the next step. Base them on business commitments rather than someone else's fixed number. Review the decision when new information appears. Past spending is not sufficient reason to spend more. Write the continuation condition before paying for the next test.
Write the test decision before launch
Define the hypothesis, primary metric, minimum data to review, maximum duration and affordable cost. These depend on the purchase cycle, order volume and financial capacity. There is no single rule for every business.
A practical step to try
Validate measurement first: does the event fire once, are test orders excluded, and has enough time elapsed for delivery? Changing several elements makes causes harder to identify. Distinguish stopping for a technical fault from stopping for poor performance.
Should you stop on day one?
There is no universal answer. A wrong price, broken page or payment error needs quick intervention. Judging performance requires suitable data and a well-understood conversion cycle. Agree emergency conditions and the review date with the Media Buyer before the first advertising payment.
